Interview with Indigo Face

Indigo Face are European duo Mariachiara Terragin (Singer/songwriter) and Maxime Obadia (producer and multi-instrumentalist) who met at BIMM music college. Hands-on with every aspect of their project, the pair have got retro-futuristic synth-pop in the palm of their hands and we can’t wait to hear their new single ‘At the Gate’ out on November 6 but in the meantime we had a chat to find out what has been inspiring these guys…

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us! Can you tell us how the band got together?

We studied at the same University (BIMM London) and that’s where we also met our back-up band. We’ve been playing together for 5 years!

Can you tell us the best tracks you’ve listened to in 2015?
We’ve discovered so many good tracks this year! Some of our favourite are:
“Don’t Wanna Fight” by Alabama Shakes
“Saint Claude” by Christine and The Queens
“River” by Ibeyi
“How Much A Dollar Cost” Kendrick Lamar
“Green & Gold” Lianne La Havas
“Preacherman” Melody Gardot
What tips would you give an upcoming and coming band on securing their first gig?
Make sure you deliver the best show you can possibly deliver, even if you end up playing in a small pub in front of 5 people. Be always on time and reliable and surround yourself with professional and passionate people.
What are your favourite albums of all time?
“Thriller” – Michael Jackson 1982
“Little Village” – Little Village (Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, Jim Keltner, John Hiatt) 1993
“The Gold Experience” – Prince 1995
“Homogenic” – Björk 1997
“Yo” – Roberto Fonseca – 2011
(We could go on forever..)
If you could choose any stage to play on tomorrow, what would it be?
We would love to play at the Glastonbury Festival and gig at Wilton’s Music Hall in London or the Olympia in Paris.
Is there any one song that holds a special meaning for you?
Maxime: “Don’t Think About Her When You Try To Drive” by Little Village
I heard it for the first time when I was exactly feeling like the state that is described in the song. The purity of Ry Cooder’s guitar tone, the general harmony and the melody still enchant me today.
Mariachiara: “There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)” by Eurythmics was my favourite song when I was a child. I would ask my father to put on the vinyl for me and I would dance nonstop for hours over that one song.
What have been the happiest and most difficult moments you have had as a band?
We are the happiest humans on the planet when we create a new tune. There is no wrong or right, no judgment, no fears: it’s like being on a remote island completely naked and free!
When it comes to promote and sell the product, that’s when you need to leave the island and wear your best suit: sometimes it can be difficult to be your own business team, but we are learning!
What are your goals for the next five years? Anything exciting we should be looking out for?
We feel very excited about the future! We would love to record an amazing album, play on the best stages and have our songs played in movies and advertisements.
At the moment, we are about to release our single At The Gate, which will be followed by the EP. We can’t wait to share our new music!
